World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles earns P17.57M in 5 days in PH

omg!!! I haven't seen this movie.. I'm missing a lot of box office hit movies! I hope that I can watch this movie this week. Anyone here saw the movie? is it good? bad? awesome? I'm a big fan of alien invasion films after the "Invasion from Mars" movie remake and "Independence Day", but this movie "World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles" is a must watch movie for me.

MANILA, March 21, 2011 -- Columbia Pictures’ sci-fi action-thriller “World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles” colonized the Philippine box-office, claiming the No. 1 spot with a nationwide gross of a staggering P17.57-million for the five-day March 16 to 20 frame. This was announced today by Victor R. Cabrera, managing director of Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc., the film’s local distributor.

Rolling out in 84 screens (including 10 digital 2D cinemas), the alien invasion epic is the third movie from Columbia to open at No. 1 in the country this year, following the terrific launchings of January’s “The Green Hornet” and February’s “Just Go With It.”

True to its title, “World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles” likewise captured the weekend’s global box-office crown overall, with similar No. 1 openings in the United States, Russia, United Kingdom, Korea, India. Taiwan, Hong Kong, Iceland, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Uruguay and the United Arab Emirates.



In the local front, Trinoma posted the highest receipts (P1.09-M) followed by Greenbelt 3 (P 828,966), SM Megamall (P 816,274), SM Mall of Asia (P 814,613), Glorietta 4 (P 607,206), Power Plant (P557,959), Gaisano Davao (P533,177), Ayala Cebu (P 505,840), SM North EDSA (P 481,952) and Alabang Town Center (P 480,006).

Also making impressive sales are Eastwood (P 458,927), SM Cebu (P 446,360), Greehills (P 414,072), Gateway Cineplex (P 403,400), Robinsons Ermita (P 383,939), Market Market (P 343,237), Shangri-la Cineplex (P 337,388), Newport Cinema (P 323,647), SM Fairview (P 311,283) and SM Bacolod (P 309,864).

In the film, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world – Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It’s up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered before.

Michelle Rodriguez in World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles movie

I always see Michelle Rodriguez as the bad ass girl in all movies just like in Avatar and Machete, but I think here in Battle Los Angeles she played as a member of the Air Force and as a techy girl. I think girls with big guns will rule again, I'm not yet sure about his character, but being the techy always survive in some chaotic movie themes.

Fresh from her mission in the moon Pandora in James Cameron's “Avatar,” Michelle Rodriguez now plays Air Force Tech Sergeant Elena Santos, who becomes a key ally for Staff Sargeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) and his platoon, in Columbia Pictures' new sci-fi action thriller “World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles.”

“She sees everything go off on the radars,” Rodriguez says of her character.. Once the platoon finds itself battling extra-terrestrial forces, “she is one of the first on the scene to track them down and find out what they are and how they tick.”

In the film, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world – Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China for years. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It’s up to a Marine staff sergeant and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered before.

Being Air Force, Rodriguez’s character takes some ribbing from her Marine counterparts. “Marines consider themselves the elite group of all the forces,” she says. And maybe rightfully so: “They feel they train the hardest and they do a lot with the little they have. My character, a tech sergeant, they call her ‘pogue’” – that is, non-infantry, as opposed to themselves, the guys on the front lines, the grunts. But as they continue their way through LA, she will earn the Marines’ respect.


When it came to real life, the shoe was on the other foot, as Rodriguez took naturally to the military training, according to the film’s senior military technical advisor, Jim Dever. “Michelle Rodriguez is incredible. She’s a fine actress and knows herself around weapons. She was always safe with her M4, and she wants to get everything right. It got to the point where I didn’t even have to suggest the way someone might do something in real life – she’d be watching the rear of the formation walk a couple steps, turn around, check, walk – doing it just right without me telling her.”

Rodriguez is a versatile actress known for the ability to combine her “tough girl” physicality with a natural beauty and unforced sex appeal. Rodriguez was last seen in Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete” opposite Danny Trejo and Jessica Alba and James Cameron’s $200 million science fiction epic, “Avatar.”

Earth is Under Attack in "World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles"

Its like a Call of Duty meets War of the Worlds. I'm excited to see this film, and I'm blocking all my dates just to see this. I'm a big fan of UFOs and alien invasion movies. World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles will be like a first person shooter movie for me.

Press Release - In Columbia Pictures’ new sci-fi action-thriller “World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles,” earth is under attack from unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles represents the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected.

For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings – Buenos Aires in 1965, Seoul in 1983, France, Germany, China – but all of these had official stories that covered up and dismissed these inexplicable events. For example, on the night of February 24-25, 1942, with America on nationwide alert following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Angelenos were wakened to air raid sirens. The 37th Coast Artillery Brigade fired anti-aircraft shells at the flying craft over Santa Monica – some flying very slowly, and others estimated to be traveling as fast as 200 miles per hour. The shells did no damage to the crafts – only to the city itself. Though there would be several official investigations and conclusions explaining what exactly was in the sky over L.A. that night – weather balloons, etc. – it has even been suggested that secret government documents exist that show a divided opinion among military experts.

“I love how the real-life event just grounds the movie,” says producer Ori Marmur. “For the film, we decided that all previous UFO sightings, including that one, were scouting missions… gearing up for the coming invasion by unknown forces.”

“`World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles’ is the exact type of movie I love to go to the theater to see, and dreamed of directing,” says Jonathan Liebesman, who helms the story of one small group of people who find themselves taking on an unimaginable foe.

Screenwriter Chris Bertolini says that when he first struck upon the idea that would become the film, he sought to merge two of his favorite kinds of stories. “I wanted to take a story in which otherworldly beings are here on Earth and a story about individuals, where you’re seeing the battle from the POV of the guys on the ground,” he says. “I got into the idea that the story would follow a small group of guys and the audience would experience everything as they experience it.”

Bertolini’s spec screenplay was first spotted by producer Neal H. Moritz, who has vast experience with action films and saw the potential in the story. “What really stood out for me about this screenplay was that it was the point of view of one small group of people in an alien invasion. I love the specificity of that,” says Moritz. “It’s an inside look at a group of young men and women, all going through different struggles in their lives, who are out there trying to protect their country against an invading alien force.”



Aaron Eckhart leads the cast as Staff Sergeant Nantz, a career Marine who is “pretty burnt out,” he says. On the brink of retirement, he is pressed back into service. “He’s leading a bunch of young Marines into a battle with aliens in L.A. He’s doing it reluctantly, but that’s just the type of hero that I love to watch.”

Michelle Rodriguez plays Elena Santos, who becomes a key ally for Nantz and his platoon. “She sees everything go off on the radars,” she says. Once the platoon finds itself battling unknown forces, “she is one of the first on the scene to track them down and find out what they are and how they tick.” The cast is rounded out by Ramon Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Grammy-winning R&B artist Ne-Yo, and Michael Peña.
