What is the name of your label? Femke Agema

Where did you study and when did you graduate? I studied at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (Netherlands) and did a Master in Fashion Design at the MaHKU. When I tell you what year I graduated it will make me feel old, so I won't.. ;)

What inspires you as a designer? I think inspiration is a very difficult concept. I can never pinpoint what makes me want to create things. I guess it's just everything around me.

Who is your favorite designer? My favorite designer at the moment is Henrik Vibskov. I like the way he creates a whole new world around his designs during his fashion shows. He dares to think out of the box. I also love to watch what my colleague-young-designers do. I think a lot of graduation collections are so fresh and full of new ideas. They don't have to think about wearability that much yet, and that is what appeals to me.

You are taking part both in the show and exhibition of FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011. Are your runway designs and the exhibition ones related to each other? What will you bring to FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? During FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011 I will show the spring/summer 2012 collection of my label. The inspiration of this collection is the fear of a group of people who believes the world will come to an end in 2012. But off course I will approach this disastrous theme with a FemkeAgema-twist. Like with the Totem-collection I showed last year, I will present an installation-ish object which I'll show at the FASHIONCLASH-exhibition. I will keep it as a surprise what is exactly, but it is indeed related to the collection that is shown.

You also took part in the previous editions of FASHIONCLASH Maastricht, how do you recall them? I recall the previous editions of Fashionclash with a lot of joy. I had a really good time. It is such a nice feeling to see that all the hard work of making a collection comes together on the runway and to show what you're doing to an interested audience.

What do you expect from the FASHIONCLASH 2011? I expect Fashionclash 2011 to be just as fun and inspiring as the previous edition. I'm very curious about the new location!

What are your goals concerning your career? What are your ambitions? What I would love to achieve in the future is to have more time to make crazy stuff like the totempoles I made last year. But the thing is that it is very hard to make a living out of it. So what my goal is for the coming years is to make collections where I can go crazy with some items or installations, but that the collections also contain cloths that are more wearable and sellable and look appealing for buyers, so I can produce the cloths and save time for art-projects.

Where did you study and when did you graduate? I graduated in December 2009 at Man & Identity of the Design Academy Eindhoven

What inspires you as a designer/artist? I think almost everything in life :P If ''it" or "something'' gives you the energy or the feeling to create a piece, that inspires me.

Who is your favorite (fashion) designer/artist? Why? Alexander McQueen and especially what he did around his shows. Creating new worlds, he really was a precursor. It's a shame that he died...

What can you bring to FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? I will join the CLASH project and the plan is to show an energetic and experimental piece based on the material of one of my graduation project, which is black foam.



What do you expect from the FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? I think it will be an even hotter show the last year :)

How did your experience with fashion started? When did you decide to be a (fashion) designer/artist? I was really triggered by the fastness of fashion during the Academy. In my third year I decided to jump into this fashion adventure at Man & Identity, which I still don't regret!

What are your goals concerning your career? What are your ambitions? Where do you see yourself in the future? My plan is to focus on fashion film. Using film to make trend forecasts and visualize (fashion) material experiments. And hope to work with nice people:), but that is already happening...

What is your name? Carolina Reis

What is the name of your label? The project that I am presenting for FASHIONCLASH is called WEAROUT. I don’t have a name for my label. I practice under my own name. I work on different collections and projects and each one lives like a brand on its own.

Where did you study and when did you graduate? I did my bachelor at Université du Québec à Montréal in Canada and I graduated in 2008. Then I studied Master in Design in the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. I graduated in 2010.

What inspires you as a designer? Primarily, the context in which the clothes will be worn. We use garments to protect ourselves, not just for social appearances. Is the environment going to be cold, warm? How will the wearer move? At last, what does it need to communicate?

I have a multidisciplinary approach to fashion design. I seek inspiration in materials and fibres, innovation, current affairs, social behavior, psychology of identity, science, geometry and ergonomics. Basically, everything that moves the world is important and is a part of the process.

Who is your favorite (fashion) designer? Why? I am asked this question very often and it is hard for me to select one designer. Clothes reflect the values of a given society. I admire a designers who go beyond the simple fact of doing fashion, but also communicate a new vision of the world and promote quality. There are too many, but to name just a few: Bless and Martin Margiela for deconstructing, recycling and transgressing conventions; Rei Kawakubo for questioning the idea of the body and female representations; Issey Miyake for pushing technological innovation; Katherine Hammet for her legacy in fighting for ethical issues; Ying Gao for giving grace and sense to interactive garments and Hussein Chalayan for making me proud of being a fashion designer..

What can you bring to FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? I hope to show a new way of seeing fashion to the visitors of the event.

What do you expect from the FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? I hope to communicate the message that fashion is about people and for people who wear it and not about the designer.

How did your experience with fashion started? When did you decide to be a (fashion) designer? I have always had interest in visual arts. Fashion brings a great challenge because it links the creativity of an art and the pragmatism of design. It bares the history of seduction and fantasy, but also needs to satisfy basic needs of physical protection. Fashion relates to everyone as it adorns every body. It offers great possibility for artistic expression through all kinds of mediums that go beyond just clothes, because it is intrinsically linked with the being.

What are your goals concerning your career? What are your ambitions? Where do you see yourself in the future? My ambitions are to continue to develop and improve my work. I would like to find new ways to overcome the challenges our societies are facing. I hope to improve people’s living, even if that means making less fashion. Designers have an increasing social responsibility.

Unconventional Wieteke

What is your name? My name is Wieteke Ilse Opmeer

What is the name of your label? The name of my label is also Wieteke Opmeer, nice and simple.

Where did you study and when did you graduate? I studied "3D design" at the Art academy of Utrecht (HKU) and I graduated in 2008.

What inspires you as a designer? I get inspired by simple things that seem effortless. The ones that you think "why didn't I think of it?". I like to think of designing as I think of cooking. Just a few simple ingredients in the right balance usually make the greatest tasting dishes.

Who is your favorite artist? Why? For a long time now my favorite artist is Andy Goldsworthy. He is an artist that builds art in nature with the use of surrounding materials which he usually documents over time, showing the artwork going back to nature. I love the powerful simplicity of his work. By using materials that are ‘already there’ the artwork isn’t ‘forced’ but just utilizing the natural beauty. This is exactly what I also would like to do in my work – working with the material instead of forcing my ideas onto something that isn't made for it.

What can you bring to FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? I am not the typical fashion oriented artist and I think that could create interesting opposites which could elevate both sides. I like to think that opposites attract. But most of all I will bring myself and my vision.

What do you expect from the FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? I'm hoping for an interesting mix of people, visiting and cooperating. I also hope that FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011 will create the atmosphere in which you will get in touch with interesting people and expand your network.

How did your experience with fashion started? When did you decide to be a (fashion) designer? As a young girl I realized that I had to do something creative, since I couldn’t be happy sticking to the "regular" way of living. Very early I decided to try my creativity as a florist, however finishing ‘florist’ courses I knew that I wasn't "there" yet. At that time I applied to the art academy, where I was developing and over the years got a clearer vision of what I wanted. It was clear enough that after graduating I decided to start my own business and try to make a living of it.

What are your goals concerning your career? What are your ambitions? Where do you see yourself in the future? I would like to have my own line of beautiful, hip and affordable ecological textiles like teacloths, table-linen and so on, which larger companies could sell and from which I could gain a "steady" income. This would give me more time and finances to experiment and do art projects, on my own or with other artists, because my favorite thing is to keep playing.

FASHIONCLASH at Cream PR Press Day

On 12th of April FASHIONCLASH went to Amsterdam the attend the Press Day at Cream PR. Cream PR is an established PR agency specialized in fashion and lifestyle. Its portfolio is impressive and showcases more 40 leading clothing and accessories labels. What is interesting about Cream PR is that it not only represents top commercial brands but also promotes young designers: Antoine Peters, Hester Vlamings, Marloesblaas, NON by Kim, Leonie Smelt and Pauline van Dongen.

During the Press Day Cream PR opened up the doors to its exciting and inspiring showroom where we could have a preview of the AW 2011 collections. Thanks to DJ Titia, visiting fashionistas and lovely people from Cream PR the atmosphere was great! Thank you for invite!

What is your name? Manon Boertien

What is the name of your label? Manon Boertien

Where did you study and when did you graduate? I graduated in 2009 from the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) in fashion design

What inspires you as a designer? Nowadays everyone looks for happiness and the truth in his own way. However, in the past people lived in a community where everyone had a fixed place and role. Happiness and truth was to be found trough God and the family.

Today, everyone is an individual who is detached from the unshakable ties of the past and determines his own life. We can make our own choices and decide for ourselves how to fill our life with happiness and truth. It’s this behavior of people searching for truth and happiness that fascinates me.


Who is your favorite fashion designer or artist? Why? I do not necessarily have one favorite artist or fashion designer. I look for inspiration to so many artists in different disciplines. It can be a movie director, a fashion designer or a music band as well as inspiring people in my personal life.

Some names which are in my top list at the moment are: video artist Shana Moulton, musical groups Neon Indian and Toro y Moi, medieval painter Hieronymus Bosch and movie director Alejandro Jodorowsky.

All these artists create new virtual worlds, philosophical, sometimes-psychedelic worlds. But often with a sense of humor in it. These artists inspire me to go on creating my own philosophy about my fascinations (as I described in the previous question).

What can you bring to FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? I’ll show my new collection: a search of happiness #2. This collection was inspired by : a quote by a French philosopher Jean Baudrillard: "God exists but I don't believe in him”, various religions and their rituals and Zardoz and Holy Mountain – two philosophical/ sci-fi movies from 70s.

The links between these things are the searches for the truth through the use of an "invented" religion, mysticism, rituals and symbolism.

During FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011 I’ll show a collection that can be used as ritual garments for my own made up religion. I also hope to translate this into a short film soon after the event.

What do you expect from the FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2011? I hope I can show my new collection to a broader audience, I hope to see many inspiring talents and a lot of different styles. I also expect to see fashion from different viewpoints and perspectives, to meet new people and see old friends and, of course, to have a very nice weekend!

How did your experience with fashion started? When did you decide to be a fashion designer?When I was young, every week I wanted to become someone else, but I was always very creative. At times I was drawing all kinds of strange garments, like for example Egyptian space-outfits or my own wedding dress.

After high school I studied fashion design in Amsterdam because at that time I thought it was the best creative school to go to. I have learned a lot in techniques but I really missed the arty side so I decided to go to the School of Arts where I developed the real love (and hate, which makes it even more interesting) relation with fashion.

What are your goals concerning your career? What are your ambitions? Where do you see yourself in the future? In a couple of weeks / months I would love to make a short film using this collection. With the movie I would like to present my own fictional religion.

In the future, I hope to do many projects in collaboration with various artists in different disciplines. By doing so, I would like to explore my inspiration and concept from multiple perspectives.

Furthermore, one of my dreams is to design the costumes for a big or low budget Science Fiction film.

'Ode to the Dutch fashion talent' by PS Magazine

There's a new magazine in Holland, with the concept 'Ode to the Dutch fashion talent'.
FASHIONCLASH loves this concept, specially because they will put young designers in the spotlight!

It is a magazine that provides a platform for young, emerging talent in fashion, fashion photography and fashion illustration. Current fashion magazines tend to focus on already established brands, making it difficult to get a foothold in the fashion industry. PS gives the chance to emerging talents and opportunity to make themselves known to the general public. PS is positive, fresh, upbeat and energetic and would like something nice and refreshing fashion show.

On the cover of the first issue the models is wearing an outfit by Leonie Smelt, that was a shown on FASHIONCLASH Maastricht 2010.
